Apples
The Apple is sweet smelling, all have different colours of skin. The
deep red apple is bland to taste, especially the Canadian Reds. Dunn’s
are small and very sweet, they have a lovely smell like flowers. My
husband's favourite apple is the Russet. It has a dullish green skin and
a taste of its own which has to be acquired. He introduced me to it, the
flavour is unique. I buy them when they are in season, the same with the
Dunn’s.
Baking apples are excellent for apple pies also baked apple, and they
are lovely with a crumble topping. When I was a child, two doors away
had baking apples. My dad would swap them with lettuces, as food was
hard to get because we had ration books. The lady gave us apples that
were both eaters and cookers. To this day I don’t know what they were
called.
When my Gran came to live with us she bought an apple tree. Our grandma
called it the fender tree, not very tall. The name fender came about
because my grandmother sold her fender, which is a fire support, to buy
the apple tree. When I grew up I worked in a nursery garden. It could
have been a kind of Golden Delicious. You only got a crop when we had a
good summer harvest.
There are also New Zealand apples, Gala and Braeburn apples. These
apples are found in most supermarkets.
