Fortunate Meal
After their meal she held the light brown Chinese wafer-biscuit in her
hand out of view from the others because she was hesitant about opening
the little parcel of prophecy.
‘Open it Sophie darling,’ urged her best friend, Lady
Whittingstall-Brown. ‘It won't bite you.’
‘Prudence, it's a biscuit and can't improve my life.’ ‘Then open it and
stop being such a spoil sport.’
‘OK,’ she said, snapping it in half. Anyone who keeps the ability to see
beauty never grows old. ‘There you are; are you satisfied Pru?’
‘I wonder what it means?’ asked Kate.
‘It means that if she carries on working at the art gallery for the rest
of her life she'll never turn into an old hag,’ scoffed Harry.
‘Harry you're outrageous, we can't take you anywhere,’ protested Bea.
‘Bea darling, fate may have just intervened in Sophie's life yet she's
ignoring it like you ignore the doorbell. William!’ said Harry.
‘Oh, guys I do apologise for being so incredibly late. The damn plane
was four hours late taking off from Los Angeles and then the bloody
pilot fainted just before turning on the auto pilot. He knows that one
can't compete in a squash tournament on a work day. He could have killed
us all, damn fool. It's a good job I was there to flick the switch as
they say.’
‘William you’re a hero. How marvellous a hero has come to my party,’
said Prudence, winking at William.
‘So, what's this party celebrating? That it's Thursday?’ remarked
William. Sitting down next to her he asked: ‘What piece of news is so
important that you've forgotten to invite your Mama and Papa?’
‘I'm getting married.’'
‘Yes we know, to Andy, Mama and Papa had it arranged from the moment you
were born.’
‘No I'm not marrying Andy, I'm going to marry Trevor. Trevor is the
manager of a supermarket called Netto.’
‘Pru, Papa will have a heart attack and your Mama will convalesce for
the rest of her life. What's wrong with you, are you ill?’ enquired
William.
‘No, I'm fine. I met Trevor last week when I popped into William Hills
to place a bet on Papas horse, Nashers Teeth.’
‘What!’ gasped William.
‘Look here's my engagement ring.’
‘It's Zirconia!’ spluttered William.
‘Yes very ethical and there's no chance it's a blood diamond.’
Sophie knew that Prudence would marry Trevor. Her father had no control
over her now that she was a self-made millionaire manufacturing
renewable energy.
Sophie grinned broadly as her fortune cookie had indeed predicted her
future. She saw beauty at the art gallery when Andy visited her each
day.
They weren't having an affair yet he'd proposed again last week and had
presented her with one of his mother's rings and with her blessing.
Andy's mum, the Queen of England loved Sophie. Now that Pru had refused
the role of potential Queen, Sophie knew her face could appear on royal
paraphernalia and that she'd never grow old.
