What
Did I See at the Stockport Victorian Extravaganza?
Getting off the bus to go to the market I passed St Peter’s Church. It
had a Christmas Fair. I went in and there was a White Elephant stall. I
bought a few things and said hello to those I knew. Coming to the café
in the church there was a tombola and I gave over my pound. Why! I won
two things, then I left and made my way to the market.
As I got there the Morris Dancing had just finished so without a leaflet
I wondered around. So many people dressed up. I saw Victorian ladies
selling mulled wine. Many people buying, could hardly move.
I never saw the chimney sweep’s cart, also I never saw the fire eaters
but I did see the Stockport Brass Band. Too late for the Mill Town
Cloggises, missing them as I’d been to St Peter’s Fair. Well now I’m
cold but I can’t drink mulled wine, so to St Mary’s for hot coffee. I
even got the last toast. I sat with my coffee to listen to the choir
rehearsing, then I left.
I walked around the stalls, seeing a nice pink scarf. I bought it. Left
to look at other things. The tall policemen pass us by, ducking through
the door. They were on stilts. There were people dressed as Victorian
traders, while others queued for free chestnuts. It was a long queue.
Going into a café I had a vegetable soup. This warmed me. There was some
more Morris Men, but I missed them again. Walking by the side of the
Craft Activities I was given a paper shape of a Victorian doll for my
Granddaughter to create. Well! Time to leave for home, after looking at
the Fire Engine Service.
It was not ’til I got home and started this story of a Saturday out that
I realised I did have the programme with all the different things.
