A Lost and Found Story
Amos shuffled towards the cardboard box. Inside was an old grey cardigan
that nobody had claimed. A small dog was laying there, the baggy sleeves
of the cardigan tucked up over its body. Amos reflected back on the last
five years, from the loss of his wife Maryann to himself suffering a
stroke that left him with no feeling in his right side and a noticeable
limp. His thirty year career as a train driver was over. With a shiver
he could still remember the utter despair he felt and all he could think
of was joining Maryann.
Amos thought of that evening when, unable to sleep, he trudged out into
a dark wet night. Turning a corner he came upon the pitiful sight of a
small dog barely able to walk. Its fur was sodden wet and covered in
mud. Above one eye was a deep cut, the blood mingling with the rain
lashing down over its head. Around its neck was a knotted piece of rope,
the frayed ends dragging along the pavement. With a feeling of empathy
and compassion Amos picked up the rope and led the dog to his home.
At that moment Amos knew his life would change. And so it proved. A few
days later he opened a letter from British Rail. As he read the words
his heart missed a beat. He was being offered a job at their Lost
Property Office.
Amos moved towards a number of items waiting to be sorted and stored in
the lost and found cupboard. Looking at the dog with affection he said:
‘It’s a funny old world you know, we’ve both been lost and found.’
