About Myself
My mother in her infinite wisdom named me Veronica I think that as I
was the 6th child in the family she must have used all the good names up
before I came along. But I have always been called Roni for short it
hasn’t always been spelt Roni but everyone said I had a boys name so I
spell it with an “i” it sounds more feminine.
I went to secondary school in the early sixties but it wasn’t a very
happy time for me a couldn’t keep up with the other pupils because when
I tried to copy off the board the teacher would wipe it of so I could
never finish my work. I was labelled with being slow if they were being
kind but I was mostly called thick. My teacher told my mother I would be
better of just getting married as I would never be an academic. As I
could read and write (in a fashion) I managed to hide this but always
felt different from others. I became very shy and avoided talking to
people in case I made a fool of myself. Then when I married my second
husband seven years ago I told him about how I felt, he advised me to go
to our local college and do a course in literacy and numeracy which I
did it was the best thing I have ever done. The tutor told me she
suspected I might be dyslexic and arranged for me to have a test I was
found to indeed be dyslexic, halleluiah at last I knew why I struggled
so much at school to be fair I don’t think dyslexia wasn’t recognised in
the sixties. It was about this time I started writing poetry I had
always written it in my head but never had the confidence to put it on
paper. My tutor was delighted she showed it to other tutors and they
said I had a talent for this kind of thing which gave me the confidence
to do an English GCSE I loved every minute of it true I had to do some
parts over and over again to make sure I got it right but the effort was
worth it as I passed my GCSE with a “B” grade. Over time one of our
councillors heard me reading my poetry at a college dinner and gave me a
grant to have a small book of poems published.
As,"My late sister was a moderator" on Createwrt.net site. I have been asked if
I would like to train as one also which I am pleased to do. I have
written many poems and also like to write stories sometimes so I am
looking forward to writing more for the site and getting in contact with
others with the same interest in poetry and stories.
