Poem Celebrating 60 Years of the NHS

(Dedicated to my Dad, who had to pay the doctor at the door as a young boy)

What would Ernest Bevin say,

If he could see it was the NHS's 60th Birthday today?

From the simple idea of National Insurance Contributions,

Offering all, Healthy Solutions.

This is what Bevin would say.

Would he find it all disjointed and sometimes be a little disappointed.

What would he say?

With Partnership working we will all pull together

And keep Bevin’s NHS dream lasting forever.

This is what we will say.

No more 1940s ideas of paying the doctor at the door,

‘For God’s sake the English had only just come out of the war’.

This is what Bevin would say.

GPs, Community Nurses, now come to your door

To give you the care you need and keep you from the hospital door.

This is what we will say.
