THE CROSS OF ST.GEORGE
Remember when it was flown On church towers only For special occasions, deaths, Holy festivals and Shakespeare’s birthday
A red cross on a white ground The cross of St.George Few noticed it Fluttering above the grave-stones and the lynchgate
Now it is everywhere Not just in ones, But twos and threes and fours, Streaming out behind cars, trucks, lorries and white vans
Why is it everywhere? What does it mark? Why it’s for football And to encourage England’s hopes of victory
No dragons there then, No maidens in distress Only a saint for all purposes One whose time will come again in four more years by Ann Slatter July 2006
