Preservation

I got up one morning, had my breakfast then started the housework. I thought I’d wash up first, so filling the sink with soapy water I started the washing up. As I was getting a knife out of the water I cut my finger. I rinsed it under the cold tap and went to get a plaster, as I turned round I tripped over the dog and stubbed my toe. I walked to the other room and as I did so I bumped my head on a cupboard. I thought to myself, well this is a nice start to the day.

After the housework was done I decided to go to the shops. I was just about to go and get my car keys when I thought, no, after the morning I’ve had I’ll walk to the shops. I took a slow, leisurely stroll. There was no driving around looking for parking spaces, no scrambling to find change for the parking meter. In fact there was no hassle at all. I took my time walking round the shops, bought a few things including a magazine, then took a nice stroll back home again. I wasn’t at all agitated like normal. No parking the car.

Fishing for the keys for the front door, I went in and made myself a cup of tea and sat down to read my new magazine. I couldn’t believe how calm I was and how rested I felt. I even had time to prepare the dinner ready for the family and still had plenty of time to spare to sit down again for another cup of tea and another look at my magazine. I thought to myself, well in future I won’t drive the car to the shops, I’ll take a pleasant walk which will give me exercise. No looking for parking spaces, no finding change for the meter, and no hustle and bustle. It will be just self preservation.
