Pear Mill Stockport

Have you any Stories or History of this Building?
Stories from Pear Mill
I worked at Pear Mill straight from school for three years from 1960. I
recall working in the card room with a big chap named Bill Burke, who
liked
to tell stories from his past, a bit like I'm doing now. There were the
Thomas sisters and their friend Hilda Tattersall from Gorsey Bank,
Cheadle
Heath. A guy called Cliff had a favourite story from war-time Stockport
when
he drove trams. When trams were coming down Lancashire Hill, the drivers
used to take the tram out of gear so they could free wheel and go
faster.
Unfortunately, the tracks were not smooth enough for speed so Cliff's
tram
bounced out of the tracks which rendered the brakes useless! The result
was
Cliff finishing up crashing through 'Burton's Tailors shop window.
(Great
Edgerton St wasn't there then, i.e. Lancashire Hill went straight down
into
Warren St.) Cliff seemed really proud of this feat! I still chuckle at
his
pride.
