Fear of Flying

A friend of mine who emigrated to Australia many years ago was always asking me to visit her and her husband Jim. My reaction to this was always, maybe one day I will. I did especially want to see my dear lifelong friend Felicity, it was thirty seven years since we last met, but the mere thought of one of those phone calls, asking me to visit her, would set me off in a panic attack, feeling sick. Headache, sweaty palms and literally feeling really unwell.

My fear of flying began when I went on holiday to Spain a few years ago. The flight there went very smoothly, lovely clear day, perfect take off and excellent landing. My holiday was great. I had a super time, did lots of sightseeing and relaxing, and was determined that I would be back to visit this beautiful location, that I had enjoyed so much, the following year.

The flight back home took off OK then the weather started to change. We then encountered really bad turbulence. The plane started bumping and shaking. This made me very agitated. Chest pains developed and a headache. I became very afraid.

The flight attendants were marvellous, so calming and helpful; then shortly after I started to feel a lot better. Weather conditions improved. A light flashed and the Captain’s voice said: ‘Please fasten your seat belts.’ The plane landed smoothly. There are so many places to visit and am not letting this flight put me off because of my fear of flying.

I started to surf the internet looking for courses to help my fear of flying and came across Virgin. I was amazed how many people have this problem. I’ve read about these courses and found that they have a lot to offer in supporting people overcome this phobia. Just reading about these courses has already given me more confidence. The information given is clear and prices are reasonable. So I am certainly going to give this a try.
