THE FRENCH RAILWAY RAT
A long time ago there was a little French rat who lived in a very damp
cellar in a big station in France.
He was not very happy for he’d never seen the light of day, but his
mother told him that it was very dangerous at the top of the railway
station. He wouldn’t believe his mother.
So one day he went up to see for himself and all he could see was the
feet of lots of people and the wheels of trolleys. Then all of a sudden
there was a big cat getting ready to jump on him, he didn’t know what to
do, as he’d never seen a cat before. He didn’t like the cat so he ran as
fast as his little legs would carry him back to his mother.
He never went up to the very top again but waited until the people
dropped some tasty morsels down the gratings for him to eat. He lived
for a very long time and told his children about the day he went to the
top of the railway station and how dangerous it was. And what a very
stupid thing he had done.
