Megan’s Off To School
Megan had been looking forward to today for weeks, ever since she spent
the afternoon in St Mary's before the summer holidays. Then she had been
disappointed to learn she couldn’t go until September when she was four
years old. Megan lived with her Mother and her Grandmother, who she
called Nanma. This was her pet name for her Grandmother. She had said it
since she was a baby. It was a mixture of Nanny and Grandma. Her
Grandmother never minded as she loved Megan very much. Now Megan had
been born in a hot country called Jamaica. Her Mother and Grandmother
were also born in Jamaica and Megan had come to England when she was
only six months old. So she didn’t remember living in Jamaica at all.
She had her bath and her Mummy applied soothing oil to her skin to make
it smooth and smell nice. After this she dressed herself in her red and
grey uniform. Megan felt very grown up walking between her Mother and
Grandmother to school. When they arrived her Mummy told her to be a good
girl and added they would be there to take her home again at lunchtime.
Her Nanma told her not to be frightened as she would enjoy herself at
school. But Megan was not a bit afraid, she couldn’t wait for the bell
to ring and go to her classroom. At last she heard the tinkling sound of
the bell and Mummy and Nanma kept kissing and squeezing her as she
wriggled to get free and go into her classroom. As she went she turned
to wave to her Mother and Grandmother, she saw they were both dabbing
their eyes with a hanky. Megan never knew why they were crying, she was
far too excited about school. She just ran inside to her class. There
were lots of other children in the classroom, all beginning to sit at
tables. She went to a table with two children sitting at it. They gave
her a nice friendly smile and told her their names were Nathan and
Jodie. She liked these two children straight away. Like all the others
she had a sticker on her fleece, and a coat peg and drawer with her name
and a picture. Her's was a lovely little kitten. Megan just loved
kittens. She decided to ask her Nanma if she could have a kitten. She
could always get round her Grandmother when she wanted something. She
was delighted to see the class had a play area with toys and fun things.
Her favourite toy was a big Wendy house. It had yellow walls, blue
windows and doors, and a bright red roof. Inside it had yellow curtains
with little flowers on and a little table with two chairs. The table was
set with cups. There was even a little cooker with pans. She was so
happy, she loved all this. In the play area there was also play dough, a
big box of crayons and colouring pencils. She loved to draw and colour
pictures.
The children all sat at their tables, so Miss Edwards, their teacher,
showed cards with colours on and they said what colour the cards were.
Megan knew all her colours and so did her two new friends. Then the
teacher told them what kind of things they were going to do in class
when they were all settled in and stayed all day. Megan couldn’t
understand why she wasn’t allowed to stay all day, after all she wasn’t
a baby. She was looking forward to learning how to read. Her Grandmother
had already taught her to recognise some words and she already knew all
her letters, and she could also count up to one hundred. So she was
happy to be able to learn more. When the teacher finished talking they
all went outside to play. They all had so much fun playing on the
climbing frames and crawling through the tubs. Jodie and Megan played on
the see-saw together. When they came in Miss Edwards told them all to go
to the story mat and there they sang songs. Megan loved to sing. Her
Mummy and Nanma sang in the church choir and she wanted to sing in it
too when she was big enough. So she sang the songs at the top of her
voice. To help them settle down Miss Edwards read them a story about a
chicken. Then before Megan knew it the morning had flown by and the time
had come for them to go home. Her Mother was waiting for her at the
door. She asked her where Nanma was? Mummy said: 'One of her friends
from church is visiting her for a while, so she is waiting for them at
home.' Megan told her Mummy what a simply wonderful time she’d had
today, and couldn’t wait until tomorrow. She then skipped all the way
home. She couldn’t wait to tell her Grandmother about school and she had
decided to ask her Grandmother about having a kitten too.
