Poems by Nelferch Merchoed
Surprised
for G. N.
I'm standing in the magic circle
of a lonely candle's golden light.
One letter's lying on the floor-neglected,
words in black ink fallen in dark oblivion.
while reading eagerly the other message
which makes the blood rise to my cheeks,
I do not hear You entering,
until I lift my eyes -
pressing the paper to my lips.
The light is dancing on Your face,
unfathomable depth,
when You bend down in one smooth movement
taking the sheet which has dropped carelessly
and read out loud:
'My dearest lady, you are lovely.'
You take the other letter from my trembling hands:
'If words so warm like these
you cast away so carelessly,
what may a message hold
you have laid to your heart?'
The world is ending - - - -
the time goes to eternity
and I am still embraced by You
whilst now another letter's lying in the golden circle
these words displayed by dancing light:
'My lady, please accept
this song of praise for your Beloved.'
