Poems by Nelferch Merchoed

  Song for Melwas

Gwenhyfar speaks:

I used to read of love
In prose and poetry
And even this occurred to me
That words were wrought in to a wreath -
Talking of birds and trees,
of song and wisdom,
of roses red and emerald gems:
love’s tribute lithe and light,
so light indeed as petals in the wind
soon blown away and withered.

So this befell:
I stood at fireplaces cold,
The wind of treason howling
Through hollow windows,
Undoing my attempts
To kindle living flames from ashes.

You entered then
the hall of wintry coldness.
I felt your hand upon my neck.
My hair a plaything for your fingers.
You lifted me from ashes,
And fanned the embers with your breath
To blazing light, a shining blessing.
Cradling my face, my heart, my soul
in your blessed hands,
and kissed away my tears, my sorrow and my pain…

you found me roses white and red, and fragrant basil,
growing its roots in my own heart,
a bird all green like talking trees,
a falcon placed upon my hand,
doves making love to make me merry,
the raven's cry a lore of wisdom,
a gem of living golden-greenness to nestle in my hair,
when sleeping under flowering apple blossoms,
a rain of whiteness.
At night the shooting stars and singing wells,
And priceless treasure of your whispers
Wanton and wise as healing waters
And shining brightness for my safety.

You brought me to your land of Summer
Enjoying living love in greenness.
Whereas, behind the gateway
The winds of treason and despair still howl
In idle rage,
Defeated by blessed light.
