  RETIREMENT ISN'T THE END

Busy in my other life,
Off to the office, a working wife.
Shopping at lunchtime, stand in a queue,
How I wished for nothing to do.
Cooking and cleaning for husband and son,
Never seemed the day would be done.
Now I'm retired, it seems so queer,
Learning to cope in a different sphere.

The house is so quiet, son married and gone
I await with pleasure the visit of grandson.
Husband is working, still carrying on.
I've done gardening and knitting, reading a book,
Even tried new ways to cook.
But time still hung heavy, so I started to write
Stories and poems, I thought I was bright,
But no-one would read them, so in frustration
I joined a class at Adult Education.

Here I met many friends and received good advice
From a teacher, but found in a trice
I'm not a genius with words I fear.
I'11 never be a Dickens or even Shakespeare
But I get my thoughts down that go round in my head
And sometimes in class they do get read.
Though I'm afraid I'11 never find fame,
The Best Seller List will never bear my name,
But I get satisfaction from learning a skill
And if you can join us I know that you will.
