                                      PROGRESS IN REVERSE

I've lived in our village many long years,
Sometimes with happiness, sometimes tears,
But the village I knew long ago
Has changed much since it started to grow.

Gone the green fields surrounding the place,
Builders came and took all the space.
Now there are office blocks of concrete and glass,
A motorway and an underpass.

On the edge of the village new houses were built
For people from the city who had no guilt
When fields and hedges where wild flowers grew
Now sprout tin cans and plastic of every hue.

Then aeroplanes to and from airport roar overhead,
And make enough noise to awaken the dead.
The village at night was quiet and serene
Now rowdy teenagers shout and scream.

Old faces and neighbours they've drifted away
Not many left from yesterday.
Tried fighting the Planners, no chance of winning.
I wish it was all back as in the beginning.
