CHIVALRY
The code of chivalry gave society an ideal of what
true nobility should be. Its characteristics were defined as, modesty,
generosity and gentleness to the defenceless, particularly to women and
the pursuit of honour, whether in battle or in tournament. By this code
the aristocracy defined itself as the elite in medieval society and the
orders of chivalry were the elaborations of this ideal. Inaugurated into
this ideal were Arthur's Round Table and his knights in tournaments.
Various orders of chivalry were founded. Edward III founded the Order of
the Garter in 1344; Charles of Burgundy founded the Order of the Golden
Fleece, La Toison d'Or, in 1430;
Alfonso of Spain founded the Order of the Band; John of France founded
the order of the Star in 1346.
