Poems by Carolanne Murphy
Sitting on the Bus
Sitting on the bus
Rain hitting the roof
Almost dark outside
People rushing about
Umbrellas everywhere
No faces just umbrellas
Half catching shop signs as we pass
So many stops
Traffic lights
Railway crossings
A mother tries to quieten her hungry and tired child
Teenager clutches her bags of new clothes
An elderly lady hugs tight her meagre shopping
It’s kind of lonely on a bus
Surrounded by noise
By people
And yet alone
I just want to get home
Lights shining on the puddles
An mp3 player
Can’t quite catch the song
And yet this is life
Life at its most real and solid
This bus
Taking us all somewhere
Not all going home
But I am
And so glad of this
My stop is next
So I get up
Hold on so I dont fall
And stand near the driver
Doors open
Step down
Almost run the few yards home
The faces on the bus forgotten
The noise forgotten
So surreal
My journey home
