Poems by Anne Knight
IF ONLY
If only I could have the courage to fly to swim or scuba dive To fly
like a huge bird seeing the mountains, lakes and trees from a great
height
If only I could have travelled the world, run like the wind
If only I could walk like I did on hills all blue, purple, dark green
with the shadows passing by.
If only
If only I could have climbed Everest the highest peak in the world If
only I could have ridden a bike around the world
If only I could have had a barque and sailed the world like my great
uncle
If only like my great uncle I could speak seven languages If only
If only I could see all the houses where my ancestors lived
Be they headmasters, tailors, clerks or sellers of cloth
If only I could go back in time and be a shadow on the wall If only
If only I had travelled the world by sea
In a barque like my grandfather did
I would stand and pull at the sails, climb the rigging, have no fear of
heights
And watch the swell of the waves, feel the strength of the roaring sea
If only
If only I could talk to the people of the forests and dense jungle
I would have treasured memories for life
If only I could speak several languages
If only
If only I could have talked to the people who built the Great Wall
If only
